Crosstimbers Prairie
Early Texas settlers repeatedly crossed the Post Oak forests during the westward migrations. Sometimes dense trees on the open prairies slowed travel. Hilly forests also provided distant visible landmarks such as Pilot Knob for navigating. Red sandy soils to loamy with sandstone outcrops. Little bluestem with Indiangrass dominated the open savannahs.
