Similar to Prairie Wildrye, this plant is found on bottomlands, low prairies, stream banks, and edges of woods, in moist fertile soils. Virginia wild rye is very palatable and nutritious for livestock, but becomes tough when mature. It is excellent for establishing vegetation in shady areas. It mixes nicely with all other warm-season native grasses. Its seedlings are vigorous and produce ground cover rapidly. It is a larval food source for butterflies, and the grain from seed is an important food for wildlife.
