This now rare tree is native to central and west Texas's dry limestone slopes and caliche soils. It can reach up to 25 feet but has airy foliage so that sun loving species can still bloom underneath. The yellow and fragrant puffball flowers emerge from April to October, with special exuberance after a rain. It's foliage and high protein seeds provide valuable forage for herbivores (livestock, deer, songbirds) while also providing essential cover for ground nesting birds. Goldenball Leadtree is vital in ongoing restoration efforts of the western Texas Hill Country as it establishes quickly from seed and fixes nitrogen in the soil for other plants to utilize.
